[Closed Thread] Malfunction

Who: Sid and Cliff.
What: Fixing the water malfunction.
When: November 8th, 12:46 PM.
Where: Around the base. Starts in RED base, though.

A somewhat wet Cliff was going straight toward the RED Engineer's room, toolbox in hand and trying not to get anything important soaked. He had already been down to where the water malfunction was, and it was getting kind of flooded down there--high time he got Sid and went to fix it. Cliff looked back over his shoulder and frowned at the wet bootprints being left in his wake, making a mental note to come back and clean that up if it hadn't dried already when they were done.

Now that he was at Sid's door, he lightly rapped his knuckles on the wood. "Hey, Sid! That water thing's gotten a bit worse. 'S prolly a good idea if'n we go fix it." Wait. What if he was busy with something? Just barging in like this would be rude. "--uh, if y'ain't already occupied, that is."

...hopefully Sid was in there. Cliff hadn't bothered to check, and he didn't feel like being the idiot Engineer today.

sdfd all these notifs how did I miss them

Sid, relieved of his burden, stood somewhat helplessly nearby with the flashlight, massaging his forearms and watching the blood pooling around their ankles. He wanted to offer help -- or do something, anyway, except stand and stare -- but seeing the bloody mess of Cliff's hand and the faint greenish tinge of his face made him queasy and heartsick.

The heck did you even say with something like this, anyway? He'd seen some nasty electrical burns in his time, but no way was Cliff gonna get to keep that arm -- the bit Doc was wrapping up looked pale as a sheet of paper. Best just to hold the flashlight and let Doc get to work, he felt, biting his lip and focusing on a line of valves in his periphery. Then a thought occurred. "Y'need anything else, Doc? How're we gettin' him upstairs 'n all?"

I've missed it before, no worries

"Ve ah going to heff to lift him. Ve'll need to do it quickly, I don't zink he's in any state to be valking. It might be a mattah of just slinging his arms ovah ouah shoulders." It was the easiest way since he didn't think either of them had the body strength to carry Cliff over their shoulder.

Once the splint was done, he carefully swung the arm over his shoulder, one of his own going around Cliff's back and he waited for Sid's help.

Sid tucked the flashlight into his pocket and ducked dutifully into place below Cliff's uninjured side, grunting as they swung Cliff upward with a splash and the other Engineer's weight pivoted onto him. At least the motion of moving gave him some feeling of purpose. "C'mon, buddy," he murmured through gritted teeth to Cliff, who had gone quiet except for a few whimpers of pain. "Jus' get you upstairs 'n you'll be fine. Doin' good. Hang in there."

The three of them lurched toward the door, sloshing through water at every step and all but dragging the other Engineer between them.

"Don't vorry about zat right now, vorry about getting varm und dry." Mauritz grunted. Once they were on dry ground, he motioned to Sid to help him prop Cliff against the side of the wall.

"I - I zink I heff a stretcher in my office." he said, glancing over Cliff in his sodden and bloodied state. "If I get it, ve can use zat to carry him und it might make zis easier."

[identity profile] lugged-nut.livejournal.com 2010-12-08 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Sid felt bad then for chuckling a little at Cliff's observation. "Y'wan' me t'go for it?" he asked, glancing at the pale tissue protruding from between the bandages of the splint. "Might be better 'f you stay with 'im, case somethin' happens. I ain't -- y'know. Trained or nothin'."

[identity profile] lugged-nut.livejournal.com 2010-12-11 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Sid snorted. "Buddy, I seen wet noodles with more snap to 'em than you. You jus' sit tight. Won't be but a minute."

With a nod to Mauritz, he loped up the stairs again and disappeared out of sight.

[identity profile] hurtful-healing.livejournal.com 2010-12-11 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"...Zat is za vorst idea I heff evah heard. You ah going to sit right zere und not move a muscle." Mauritz couldn't allow Cliff to just walk away, not with his hand so mangled and with such high blood loss. The Engineer could collapse and simply fail to wake up again. He wasn't going to take that chance. "I'm going to stay vith you, since Sid kindly offered to get zat stretcher." He turned to the RED and provided directions to the stretchers location in his office.

After some minutes, Sid reappeared, face pinched with worry and a large bodyboard tucked under his arm. "Sorry for th'holdup, Doc. This good?" He handed it over, scanning Cliff's slumped form anxiously. "I didn' know which thing y'wanted. Saw th'big stretcher, coudln' figure how t'collapse it."

[identity profile] hurtful-healing.livejournal.com 2010-12-19 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"It vill do foah zis. Set it down. Cliff, vould you kindlylie still vhen you ah on it?" The straps were designed to make sure he didn't fall but he didn't want to take any chances. If Cliff fell then that hand would be damaged even further and as it was Maur was dreading to think what would have to be done to save Cliff's life.

Taking his hint from the Medic, Sid positioned himself at the head of the stretcher, waiting for Mauritz to finish up with the straps and grip the other end. Cliff still looked pretty woozy, he noted.

On Mauritz's count, he heaved upward, gritting his teeth against the other Engineer's weight. Carefully, they eased up the stairs one at a time and wobbled off in what Sid hoped was the direction of the Medbay.

"Not much farther now," the RED Engineer murmured, hoping he was right.

It really wasn't too much further to the medical bay thankfully. He might have once been able to take down a Soldier in a fist fight but Maur wasn't that young anymore. The doors had stuck open when Sid had gone in to get the stretcher thankfully and it was just a matter of getting Cliff in and onto a bed which took a moment of prying buckles and straps open again.

"Sid, you may go if you vish, I undahstand zat you may not vant to be around foah zis next bit." he said grimly, eyeing the glove covering the crushed hand. he was going to have to attach a blood pack to Cliff as well as some antibiotics to stop infection before he did anything else. He had a feeling he wasn't going to enjoy the next few hours, and neither would Cliff.

[identity profile] lugged-nut.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"I ain't that bothered by it," Sid said stubbornly, glancing at the bloody remnants of Cliff's hand. After all, he thought, he did see this sort of thing every day. Just... not for so long, usually. And those looked like needles over there. Ugh.

"Guess I better not get in your way, though. You gonna be okay, pal?"

[identity profile] lugged-nut.livejournal.com 2010-12-21 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Sid chuckled, a fond smile curving his face, although his eyes still looked worried. "Yeah, figure I prolly done ya worse out there a couple times m'self."

He moved to take Cliff's good hand, but hesitated -- was that gonna be a sensitive issue? -- and went for his shoulder instead, patting him bracingly. "Sure you'll do fine. You're in good hands, 'n 'at."

Pulling away, he glanced at Doc. "Take good care of 'im," he said, feeling helpless. Then he retreated reluctantly to the hallway, pulling the door to the medbay shut behind him.

"I promise, I'll do my best." Maur said before Sid left them. He turned back to Cliff and took a deep breath.

"Cliff...I need to remove zat glove to get a bettah look but...I'm afraid zat za hand may not be saved despite everyzing I do. You need to be prepared in case I am not able to mend it."

[identity profile] hurtful-healing.livejournal.com 2010-12-23 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Brace yoahself." he warned, reaching for the glove over the mangled hand. He had to lift the arm in order to get the glove free and he immediately wished that he had not.

There was no way the hand was salvageable. He didn't understand how Cliff wasn't screaming in pain with the state of it either.

((What a cherry subject on Christmas XD))

[identity profile] hurtful-healing.livejournal.com 2010-12-25 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
"..." There was no easy way to say it. "No, it isn't. I'm sorry Cliff, zere's nozing I can do except remove it without causing you furzer pain." He'd have to put the Engineer out for that removal but at least the pain would be gone.

((YEP))

[identity profile] hurtful-healing.livejournal.com 2010-12-30 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm so sorry Cliff." He breathed quietly. "I'm going to get za anesthetic now, you should just...remain still." Mauritz gently laid a hand on Cliff's shoulder, trying to comfort him before he moved away.

He had to check out Cliff's file to make sure he used the right blood type for the transfusion he'd be needing and to make sure the man wasn't allergic to anything he was about to be given. Only when everything was prepared did he return to Cliff's bedside.

"Ready?"
